In Lasting Memory: Earl Holton

A beloved leader, a lasting legacy

As we reflect on 2024, it is impossible to overlook the immense contributions of Earl Holton, whose visionary leadership and enduring commitment left an indelible mark on the Meijer Corporation, the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, and the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Foundation. His legacy is a testament to his wisdom, and to his passion for and deep understanding of the importance of art, nature, and most importantly, community.

A foundation built on generosity and vision

Earl’s association with Meijer began long before the world-class cultural institution we know today took shape. As a forward-thinking member of the Meijer team, Earl was instrumental in the early years of the company’s development. Joining Meijer in 1952 as a clerk in its Cedar Springs supermarket, he would retire as company president. His leadership helped lay the foundation for an enterprise that would grow into one of the most respected retailers in the country.

Nurtured through his work with the Meijer family, Earl’s philanthropic spirit blossomed. His vision for Meijer Gardens and its Foundation reflected his belief in the transformative power of art and nature to inspire, educate, and bring people together.

What set Earl apart was not just his generosity, but the lasting impact he made on the lives of those who knew him. His belief that art and nature should be accessible to all throughout our community was instrumental in setting Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park on a path to greatness.

Colleagues and friends share these sentiments of his lasting impact

“My dad said more than once that without Earl, there would be no Gardens. Earl’s vision and tenacity in organizing the initial capital campaign made a dream come true. He understood so well the crucial role of the Foundation as a wise collaborator with the Gardens in providing funding for their long-term stability and development. My brothers and I grew up in a household, and later in a business, where, when we shared a challenge or opportunity with our dad, the frequent refrain was, ‘Let’s ask Earl.’ Earl was a mentor for me, and, more than that, a cherished friend.” – Hank Meijer

“Earl Holton was one of West Michigan’s greatest community leaders. Earl quietly and behind the scenes was responsible for the creation and growth of many organizations and community landmarks.” – Bill Boer, Foundation President

“We all love to quote Fred Meijer saying, ‘We didn’t know what we were doing when we started Meijer Gardens, but it sure did turn out all right.’ One significant reason it turned out was that right-hand man, Earl Holton, who was at Fred’s side.” – Dirk Hoffius

“Like the old E.F. Hutton ad used to say, ‘When Earl Holton talks, people listen.’ Earl was full of wisdom, which began with being a good listener.” – John Baab

“Earl always had time to listen carefully to my questions on the Foundation’s personnel, procedures, and history. I am deeply indebted to Earl for the counsel he provided to the Foundation and myself.” – John Bouwer

“Earl had the clearest vision to the right answer for business and organizational issues that I have ever seen. We are all fortunate that Earl lived to 90 to continue his large contribution to the success of Meijer Gardens and the Foundation.” – Michael Julien

“Earl loved Fred and was totally dedicated to making Fred’s dream \[of Meijer Gardens] come true. I could call him any time day or night wherever he was in the world, and he was always there with his sage advice and warm personal support and counsel.” – Ray Loeschner

“He was an excellent listener and problem solver, a strong supporter of the individuals around him, and forward-thinking in his approach. I am fortunate to have worked with him and gleaned wisdom through his example.” – Saralyn Coupe

Propelling the vision forward

As we move forward, the vision of Earl Holton remains a cornerstone of the Foundation. Earl’s legacy is woven into the fabric of the institution, and we are deeply grateful for his commitment to enriching the lives of those who visit, learn, and find solace in the art and nature we celebrate.

Through his enduring influence, Earl has shown us that generosity and the power of community can create something far greater than we could ever imagine. For that, we are eternally grateful.
